About Gjirokastër

Gjirokastër, the "City of Stone," is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Albania renowned for its distinctive Ottoman-era tower houses built of stone and featuring characteristic grey slate roofs. Perched on the slopes of the Drino Valley beneath a massive castle, the city is one of the best-preserved Ottoman towns in the entire Balkans.

Birthplace of writer Ismail Kadare and former dictator Enver Hoxha, Gjirokastër holds deep significance in Albanian culture and history. Its cobblestone bazaar, imposing fortress, and authentic atmosphere make it one of Albania's most rewarding destinations.

Quick Tips

  • Currency: Albanian Lek (ALL). €1 ≈ 100 ALL. Cash is essential — most restaurants and shops don't accept cards. There are a few ATMs in the new town.
  • Transport: The old town is compact and walkable but extremely steep. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip on the slippery cobblestones. Buses run from Tirana (4–5 hours) and Sarandë (1.5 hours).
  • Tipping: Not common but a small tip (rounding up) is appreciated at restaurants. Service is warm and personal.
  • Cobblestones warning: The steep, polished stone streets can be very slippery, especially after rain. Flip-flops and heels are a recipe for disaster here.
  • Blue Eye day trip: The famous Blue Eye spring (Syri i Kaltër) is only 25 km away. Combine Gjirokastër with this stunning natural wonder on the same trip.
