About Varna

Varna, Bulgaria's third-largest city and the "Sea Capital," is a vibrant coastal metropolis on the Black Sea. It combines beautiful beaches, a rich cultural scene, and a 6,000-year history — the famous Varna Gold, the oldest processed gold in the world, was discovered here. The city is a gateway to the Bulgarian Riviera and a major summer destination.

Beyond the beaches, Varna boasts a stunning Sea Garden park, Roman baths, a lively pedestrian center, and an increasingly sophisticated dining scene. It's also significantly cheaper than comparable Mediterranean beach cities.

Quick Tips

  • Currency: Bulgarian Lev (BGN). 1 EUR ≈ 1.96 BGN (fixed rate). Beach bars and small vendors prefer cash.
  • Transport: Buses cover the city well. Single ticket 1.50 BGN. In summer, minibuses run to nearby beach resorts. The city center is very walkable.
  • Tipping: 10% at restaurants. Not expected at beach bars but appreciated.
  • Beaches: The central beach is good but can get crowded. Head north to Asparuhovo or south to Kamchiya for quieter stretches of sand.
  • Day trips: Visit the Stone Forest (Pobiti Kamani), Balchik Palace, or Cape Kaliakra — all within an hour's drive.
