About Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia's most visited natural attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The park features 16 terraced lakes connected by a series of waterfalls, set within a dense beech and fir forest. The lakes are renowned for their distinctive turquoise, azure, and emerald colors, which change depending on mineral content, organisms, and sunlight.

Wooden boardwalks wind through the park, passing over crystal-clear water and alongside cascading waterfalls. The Great Waterfall (Veliki Slap) at 78 meters is the tallest in Croatia. Wildlife includes brown bears, wolves, and over 150 bird species, though the animals are rarely seen from the main paths.

Quick Tips

  • Currency: Euro (EUR) since January 2023. The park accepts cards at ticket offices and main restaurants.
  • Transport: The park is between Zagreb (2 hours) and Zadar (1.5 hours) by car. Buses run from both cities. No public transport within the park — only electric boats and shuttle trains included in the ticket.
  • Tipping: Not expected at park restaurants, but round up if service is good.
  • Tickets: Buy tickets online in advance — summer slots sell out. Time-slot entry is enforced. Prices are higher in peak season (July–August).
  • Swimming: Swimming is strictly prohibited in all lakes. The ecosystem is extremely fragile. Stay on boardwalks and marked trails at all times.

Interesting Places to Visit

Lower Lakes (Donja Jezera)

The most dramatic section of the park with steep canyon walls and the largest waterfalls. The boardwalk winds between Kaluđerovac, Gavanovac, Milanovac, and other lakes. The Great Waterfall (Veliki Slap) is here — the tallest in Croatia at 78 meters.

Upper Lakes (Gornja Jezera)

A gentler landscape of 12 lakes surrounded by thick forests. Wider boardwalks, cascading travertine barriers, and the largest lake — Prošćansko Jezero. Less crowded than the Lower Lakes, especially in the morning.

Veliki Slap (Great Waterfall)

Croatia's tallest waterfall at 78 meters, plunging into a pool at the end of the Lower Lakes. The viewpoint from the base is spectacular, especially after rainfall when the water volume increases dramatically.

Lake Kozjak

The largest and deepest lake in the park, separating the Upper and Lower Lakes. An electric boat crosses the lake (included in the ticket), offering stunning views of the surrounding forested hills and cliffs.

Rastoke Village

A charming village about 30 km from Plitvice where the Slunjčica River meets the Korana in a series of waterfalls and cascades. Stone houses built over water, old mills, and swimming holes. Often called "Little Plitvice."

Barać Caves

A system of caves about 20 km from Plitvice, near Rakovica. Guided tours take you through stalactites, stalagmites, and underground chambers. A nice complement to the park visit, especially on rainy days.

Park Hiking Trails

Beyond the main boardwalk routes, the park has forest hiking trails through beech and fir woods. Routes range from 2-hour walks to full-day hikes. Trails K and H offer elevated viewpoints over the lakes with far fewer visitors.

When to Visit

Plitvice is beautiful in every season, with the landscape transforming dramatically:

🌸 Spring (March – May)

Best for waterfalls. Snowmelt and spring rains (7–18°C) fill the falls to their most powerful. Lush greenery returns. Fewer visitors than summer. Some trails may be muddy.

  • Most dramatic waterfall volume
  • Wildflowers and fresh forest growth
  • Lower ticket prices than peak season

☀️ Summer (June – August)

Warm (20–28°C) and the busiest season. Lakes are their most vivid turquoise. Full park access with all trails open. Arrive at opening time or after 3 PM to avoid peak crowds.

  • All routes and boat services operating
  • Longest daylight hours for exploring
  • Book time-slot tickets well in advance

🍂 Autumn (September – November)

Stunning fall foliage. Temperatures (5–20°C) are comfortable. Golden and red leaves reflected in the turquoise lakes create spectacular photography. Crowds thin significantly in October.

  • Spectacular fall colors (mid-October peak)
  • Misty mornings add atmosphere
  • Lower prices and fewer visitors

❄️ Winter (December – February)

Cold (−3 to 5°C) with possible snow and frozen waterfalls. Many boardwalks close, but the open sections are magical. Very few visitors — an almost mystical experience.

  • Frozen waterfalls and snow-covered boardwalks
  • Cheapest tickets of the year
  • Limited routes but unforgettable scenery
