About Rovinj
Rovinj is a picturesque fishing town on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula, often called the most romantic town in Croatia. Its colorful houses tumble down a hillside into the Adriatic, topped by the elegant Church of St. Euphemia. Narrow cobblestone streets, art galleries, and small harbors full of fishing boats create an almost Italian atmosphere — fitting, given Istria's centuries of Venetian influence.
Rovinj combines old-world Mediterranean charm with Istria's world-class food and wine scene. Truffles, olive oil, and Malvazija wine are regional specialties, and the surrounding coastline offers pristine swimming spots and nature reserves.

Quick Tips
- Currency: Euro (EUR) since January 2023. Cards accepted at most places; some konobas prefer cash.
- Transport: The Old Town is compact and walkable. Rent a bike to explore the coastal paths and nearby Zlatni Rt forest park.
- Tipping: 10% at restaurants is appreciated but not required.
- Truffles:Istria is one of the world's top truffle regions. Try truffle pasta, truffle cheese, or truffle ice cream — it's everywhere and surprisingly affordable.
- Swimming: Rocky beaches are the norm. Bring water shoes for a comfortable experience. The Lone Bay area has the best spots.
Interesting Places to Visit
Church of St. Euphemia
The baroque church crowning Rovinj's hill with a 60-meter bell tower modeled after the one in Venice's St. Mark's Square. Climb the tower for breathtaking 360-degree views over the town, sea, and islands.
Zlatni Rt (Golden Cape) Forest Park
A protected forest park south of the Old Town with cypress and cedar trees, rocky swimming coves, and cycling paths. Perfect for a half-day of swimming, walking, and picnicking in nature.
Rovinj Old Town
Wander the narrow, winding streets (some barely shoulder-width) filled with art galleries, boutiques, and hidden squares. The Grisia street hosts an annual open-air art exhibition every August. Get deliberately lost — every corner is photogenic.
Lim Fjord (Limski Kanal)
A dramatic 12-km-long channel carved into the Istrian coastline, about 10 km north of Rovinj. Known for oyster and mussel farming. Take a boat trip, kayak through the canyon, or dine at the waterside fish restaurants.
Red Island (Crveni Otok)
A small island just a 15-minute boat ride from Rovinj harbor, consisting of two connected islets. Rocky beaches, clear swimming waters, and a historic park. Regular taxi boats run in summer.
Brijuni Islands National Park
A stunning archipelago off the Istrian coast (day trip from Rovinj via Fažana). Former summer residence of Yugoslav President Tito. Safari park with zebras and elephants, Roman ruins, and pristine nature.
When to Visit
Rovinj has a mild Mediterranean climate ideal for much of the year:
🌸 Spring (March – May)
Lovely and uncrowded. Temperatures rise from 12–22°C. The Old Town is peaceful, wildflowers cover the countryside, and restaurants start opening terraces.

☀️ Summer (June – August)
Warm and sunny (24–30°C). Peak season with beach life, boat trips, and vibrant evenings. The town gets busy but never as overcrowded as Dubrovnik.

🍂 Autumn (September – November)
Still warm in September (18–25°C). Truffle season begins — Istria's most gastronomic time of year. Wine harvest, olive oil pressing, and food festivals.

❄️ Winter (December – February)
Cool (4–11°C) and very quiet. Many tourist restaurants close, but the town takes on a serene, almost mystical quality. A few local konobas stay open, serving hearty Istrian fare.

Where to Eat (Affordable & Good)
Rovinj is part of Istria's renowned food region. These spots offer outstanding quality:
Konoba Ulika$ – $$
Traditional Istrian konoba with stone walls and a vine-covered terrace. Homemade fuži pasta with truffles, boškarin beef stew, and excellent local wines. Warm, friendly service.
Da Sergio$
Legendary pizzeria that locals swear by. Wood-fired pizza with thin, crispy crust and quality toppings. Often a queue, but it moves fast. Arguably the best pizza in Istria.
Maestral$$
Seafood restaurant on the harbor with stunning sunset views. Fresh fish, grilled scampi, and risotto. Slightly pricier but worth it for the location and quality. Reserve a waterfront table.
La Puntulina$$ – $$$
Perched on the rocks at the edge of the Old Town with tables overlooking the sea. Mediterranean cuisine with Istrian ingredients. The setting is magical at sunset. Reserve well in advance.
Kantinon$ – $$
Modern seafood bistro near the fish market. Daily menu based on the morning catch. Excellent fried sardines, fish burgers, and calamari. Casual atmosphere, honest prices.
Gelateria Italia$
The best gelato in Rovinj — possibly in all of Istria. Natural ingredients, intense flavors. Try the pistachio or the seasonal fruit sorbets. Scoops from €1.50.
Konoba Veli Jože$ – $$
Named after a folk tale giant, this rustic konoba serves generous portions of Istrian classics — maneštra (bean soup), pljukanci pasta, and grilled meats. Family-run with old-school charm.
