Larnaca
About Larnaca
Larnaca (Larnaka) is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with a history stretching back over 6,000 years. Located on the southeastern coast, it is home to Cyprus's main international airport and serves as many visitors' first taste of the island. The palm-lined Finikoudes promenade, a beautiful salt lake with wintering flamingos, and the ancient Church of Saint Lazarus make it far more than just a gateway.
The city has a laid-back, authentic feel compared to the larger resort towns. Its compact center is easy to explore on foot, and nearby attractions like the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque and Choirokoitia Neolithic settlement add historical depth.

Quick Tips
- Currency: Euro (EUR). Cards widely accepted. The airport has ATMs but avoid the exchange booths — rates are poor.
- Transport: Airport buses connect to the city center (lines 425/429). Local buses cover the town well. Walking is easy for the center and promenade area.
- Tipping: 5–10% at sit-down restaurants. Not expected at casual eateries or cafés.
- Salt Lake: Visit Larnaca Salt Lake between November and March to see thousands of flamingos. Go early morning for the best viewing and photography.
- Diving: The Zenobia shipwreck just offshore is ranked among the top 10 dive sites in the world. Several operators offer dives for all experience levels.
Interesting Places to Visit
Church of Saint Lazarus
A magnificent 9th-century stone church built over the tomb of Lazarus — the biblical figure Jesus raised from the dead, who tradition says later became the first Bishop of Kition (Larnaca). The ornate iconostasis and underground crypt are remarkable.
Hala Sultan Tekke
One of the most important Muslim shrines in the world, set on the shore of Larnaca Salt Lake. Built over the tomb of Umm Haram, aunt of Prophet Muhammad. The serene setting with palm trees and lake reflections is unforgettable.
Larnaca Salt Lake & Flamingos
A network of four salt lakes on the city's western edge. In winter, thousands of pink flamingos arrive, creating one of the most stunning natural spectacles in Cyprus. A walking/cycling path circles the lake.

Zenobia Shipwreck (Diving)
A Swedish roll-on/roll-off ferry that sank in 1980 just 1.5 km offshore. Now one of the world's top wreck dives, accessible from beginner depths (18 m) down to advanced (42 m). Trucks and cargo still visible on the sea floor.
Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement
A UNESCO World Heritage site 30 minutes from Larnaca. One of the most important prehistoric sites in the eastern Mediterranean, dating to the 7th millennium BC. Reconstructed round houses show how the earliest Cypriots lived.
