About Ústí nad Labem

Ústí nad Labem is an industrial city on the Elbe River (Labe) in northern Bohemia, surrounded by some of the most dramatic natural scenery in the Czech Republic. While the city itself is often overlooked by tourists, it serves as an excellent base for exploring the České středohoří volcanic highlands, the Elbe Canyon, and the nearby Bohemian Switzerland National Park. The city has been reinventing itself with new cultural venues, riverside promenades, and a growing café scene, making it an increasingly interesting stop for adventurous travelers.

Quick Tips

  • Currency: Czech Koruna (CZK). This is not a tourist city, so carry cash — smaller pubs may not take cards.
  • Transport: Ústí has good train connections — Prague is about 1 hour by fast train, Děčín 20 minutes. Local buses connect to surrounding villages and trailheads. The Elbe cycle path is excellent for getting around.
  • Tipping: Round up or leave 10%, same as elsewhere in the Czech Republic.
  • Base camp strategy: Use Ústí as a budget base for day trips to Bohemian Switzerland, Litoměřice, Terezín, and the volcanic highlands. Accommodation here is significantly cheaper than in more touristic towns.
  • Hiking gear: If visiting České středohoří or Bohemian Switzerland, bring sturdy shoes and layers. Trails are well-marked with the Czech coloured-blaze system (red, blue, green, yellow).

Interesting Places to Visit

Střekov Castle (Hrad Střekov)

A dramatic Gothic castle perched on a volcanic rock cliff above the Elbe River. It inspired the composer Richard Wagner and painter Adrian Ludwig Richter. Climb the tower for panoramic views of the river valley and surrounding volcanic hills. Open April through October.

České středohoří (Central Bohemian Highlands)

A spectacular volcanic mountain range surrounding the city, with cone-shaped peaks, deep valleys, and vast views. Popular hikes include Milešovka (the windiest peak in Czechia at 837 m) and Lovoš with its distinctive silhouette. The landscape is unlike anything else in the country.

Bohemian Switzerland National Park

About 30 km north of Ústí, this national park features towering sandstone formations, deep gorges, and the famous Pravčická brána — the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe. Take a day trip by train to Děčín and bus to Hřensko. One of the Czech Republic's most spectacular natural areas.

Zubrnice Open-Air Museum

A charming open-air folk museum in a preserved village about 15 km from the city. Traditional timber-framed houses, a working historical railway, and exhibitions on rural North Bohemian life. Great for families and history enthusiasts.

Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

A 14th-century Gothic church in the city centre, notable for its leaning tower that tilts about 2 metres off vertical — sometimes called the "Czech Leaning Tower of Pisa." The tilt was caused by bombing damage in 1945 and was deliberately preserved as a memorial.

Elbe River Promenade & Cycling Trail

The recently renovated riverside promenade is pleasant for walks, and the Elbe Cycle Route (EuroVelo 7) passes right through the city. Ride north toward Děčín through the stunning Elbe Canyon or south toward Litoměřice through vineyard country. Bike rentals are available in the city centre.

Litoměřice (Day Trip)

A beautifully preserved baroque town just 20 minutes south by bus or train. Known as the "Garden of Bohemia" for its mild climate and wine production. The colourful main square and the gallery of North Bohemian Fine Arts are highlights. Combine with a visit to the nearby Terezín Memorial.
