About Rakvere
Rakvere is a lively town in northern Estonia, best known for its medieval castle ruins and the striking aurochs (prehistoric bull) statue on Vallimägi hill. With a history stretching back over 700 years, the town combines medieval heritage with modern cultural ambitions. Rakvere has reinvented itself as a cultural hub with one of Estonia's best regional theaters and a vibrant arts scene.
Located between Tallinn and the Lahemaa National Park, Rakvere makes an excellent day trip or stopover. The town is compact and friendly, with a pleasant central square and several interesting museums and cultural venues.

Rakvere Castle (Rakvere Linnus)
A 14th-century Livonian Order castle on Vallimägi hill, extensively restored as an interactive medieval theme park. Try your hand at archery, visit the blacksmith's workshop, explore the dungeon, and enjoy panoramic views from the walls. One of Estonia's most family-friendly attractions.
Aurochs Statue (Tarvas)
A massive bronze statue of a prehistoric wild bull (aurochs) by sculptor Tauno Kangro, standing on the castle hill. Created to mark Rakvere's 700th anniversary, it has become the symbol of the town. Impressive in scale and beautifully detailed.
Lahemaa National Park
Estonia's largest and oldest national park, a short drive from Rakvere. Features pristine forests, coastal cliffs, historic manor houses (Palmse, Sagadi), and scenic bog trails. The Viru Bog boardwalk trail is one of Estonia's most popular hikes.
Rakvere Theatre
One of the most innovative regional theaters in Estonia, known for bold productions and contemporary drama. The building itself is a modernist landmark. Check the schedule for performances — even without understanding Estonian, the staging is often spectacular.
Rakvere Trinity Church
A beautiful 15th-century Gothic church in the town center. Features impressive medieval interior elements and a peaceful churchyard. The church has been central to Rakvere's community life for over 500 years.
Rakvere Citizens' Museum
A small but engaging museum in a historic townhouse, showing how a middle-class Estonian family lived in the early 20th century. Period furnishings, household items, and photographs give an intimate look at local history.

Rakvere is a small town with a modest but solid dining scene. Prices are lower than in Tallinn, and the food is hearty and honest:

A popular café-restaurant in the town center with a creative menu. Good salads, soups, and grilled dishes. The interior doubles as a small gallery. Excellent coffee and homemade desserts. One of the best all-round options in town.
Katariina Kelder$ – $$
A cellar restaurant beneath the town center serving hearty Estonian pub food — grilled meats, stews, and sausages. The vaulted brick interior adds atmosphere. Good local beer selection.
Castle Tavern (Linnakelder)$ – $$
Located within Rakvere Castle, this medieval-themed tavern serves food inspired by historical recipes. Try the mead, roasted meats, and rustic bread. A fun dining experience, especially for families visiting the castle.
