Lille
About Lille
Lille, the capital of the Hauts-de-France region, is a dynamic city near the Belgian border that punches well above its weight in culture, cuisine, and charm. Once an industrial powerhouse, it has reinvented itself as a vibrant cultural hub with stunning Flemish-Baroque architecture, world-class museums, and a famously warm and convivial population.
The city's Flemish heritage shows in its architecture, beer culture, and hearty cuisine. Its location makes it a strategic crossroads — Paris is 1 hour by TGV, Brussels 35 minutes, and London 80 minutes via the Eurostar. Lille's massive annual Braderie flea market draws over 2 million visitors each September.

Quick Tips
- Currency: Euro (EUR). Cards accepted everywhere. Carry cash for the markets and estaminets (traditional Flemish pubs).
- Transport: Ilévia operates metro (2 driverless lines), trams, and buses. A day pass costs €5.20. The city center (Vieux-Lille) is compact and best explored on foot.
- Tipping: Service included. A euro or two left on the table is appreciated at estaminets and restaurants.
- Beer: Lille's Flemish roots mean an exceptional beer scene. Try local brews like 3 Monts, Ch'ti, or Moulins d'Ascq at an estaminet. Belgian beers are also everywhere — you're practically on the border.
- Braderie: If visiting in early September, come for the Braderie de Lille — Europe's largest flea market. The city fills with stalls, moules-frites stands, and a festive atmosphere that lasts all weekend.
