Liepāja
About Liepāja
Liepāja, Latvia's third-largest city, sits on the Baltic coast and is known as "the city where the wind is born." With a wide sandy beach, a vibrant music scene, and the hauntingly atmospheric Karosta military district, Liepāja offers a unique blend of seaside relaxation and offbeat exploration. It has been an important naval and trading port for centuries.
The city is considered Latvia's rock music capital, with a strong live music tradition and several annual festivals. Its mix of elegant Art Nouveau center, Soviet military heritage, and laid-back beach culture makes it unlike any other Latvian city.

Quick Tips
- Currency: Euro (EUR). Cards widely accepted.
- Transport: Buses from Riga (3.5–4 hours, ~€10–14). Flights available seasonally. The city center is walkable; rent a bike for the beach promenade. Local buses connect to Karosta.
- Tipping: 10% at restaurants. Not expected elsewhere.
- Karosta: The former military district is safe to explore but some buildings are derelict. Join a guided tour or book the famous Karosta Prison hostel experience for a night behind bars.
- Wind: Liepāja is genuinely windy — bring a jacket even in summer. The wind makes it a premier kitesurfing and windsurfing destination.
