About Sigulda

Sigulda, often called the "Switzerland of Latvia," is a picturesque town in the Gauja River valley, about 50 km northeast of Riga. Set within the Gauja National Park, it is surrounded by dramatic sandstone cliffs, dense forests, and medieval castle ruins. The area is Latvia's premier destination for outdoor adventure and nature tourism.

With three castles, a bobsled track, bungee jumping from a cable car, and some of the best hiking trails in the Baltics, Sigulda offers a perfect day trip or weekend escape from the capital.

Quick Tips

  • Currency: Euro (EUR). Cards accepted at most attractions and restaurants. Carry cash for small trailside vendors.
  • Transport: Regular trains from Riga (1 hour 10 minutes, ~€3). The town is walkable, but a car is handy for reaching more remote trails and Turaida Castle.
  • Tipping: 10% at restaurants is appreciated but not mandatory.
  • Hiking shoes: Essential — trails can be steep and muddy, especially near the river and caves. Bring layers as the valley can be cool even in summer.
  • Cable car: The Sigulda cable car across the Gauja valley is a must-do (€7 round trip). Bungee jumping from it is available for the adventurous.
