Diekirch is a pleasant town in central-northern Luxembourg on the banks of the Sûre river. Known for its excellent WWII museum, its famous Diekirch beer brewery, and its role as a gateway to the Luxembourg Ardennes, it is a town that rewards visitors with its understated charm and rich history.

With Roman-era origins and a beautiful old town, Diekirch balances historical depth with a lively local culture. The surrounding hills and valleys offer excellent hiking and cycling, and the nearby Ettelbruck acts as a transport hub for exploring the region.

Quick Tips

  • Currency: Euro (EUR). Cards are accepted in most places but carry cash for smaller establishments.
  • Transport: Free buses and trains. Diekirch is about 35 minutes by train from Luxembourg City via Ettelbruck. The old town is compact and walkable.

National Museum of Military History

One of the best WWII museums in the Benelux, focusing on the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Luxembourg. Life-size dioramas, original vehicles, uniforms, and personal stories make history come alive. Allow 2–3 hours.

Brasserie de Luxembourg (Diekirch Brewery)

The historic home of Diekirch beer, one of Luxembourg's most famous brands since 1871. While the main production has moved, the heritage and brand remain closely tied to the town. Enjoy a fresh Diekirch in a local pub.

St. Lawrence Church (Decanal Church)

A church with foundations dating to the 5th century, making it one of the oldest Christian sites in Luxembourg. The interior features beautiful Romanesque elements and a remarkable 6th-century mosaic floor discovered during renovations.

Old Town & Place de la Libération

The charming pedestrian center of Diekirch with its main square featuring a memorial to General Patton's crossing of the Sûre river in 1945. Surrounded by cafes and small shops with a friendly, local atmosphere.

Deiwelselter (Devil's Altar)

A mysterious prehistoric stone formation on a hilltop above Diekirch, believed to be a Celtic or pre-Celtic monument. The short hike up is rewarded with panoramic views over the Sûre valley. A local legend says the devil built it in one night.

Sûre River Valley Trails

Scenic walking and cycling paths follow the Sûre river between Diekirch and Ettelbruck, continuing into the wider Ardennes region. Flat riverside paths are perfect for easy walks, while hilltop trails offer more challenge and views.

Municipal Museum (Musée Municipal)

A small but interesting museum covering Diekirch's history from Roman times through the medieval period. Features Roman mosaics, archaeological finds, and local heritage exhibits. Free entry.
