About Echternach
Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg, founded in 698 AD by Benedictine monk St. Willibrord. Located on the banks of the Sûre river at the German border, it is the gateway to the Mullerthal region, often called "Luxembourg's Little Switzerland" for its dramatic sandstone rock formations and lush forests.
The town is best known for its UNESCO-listed Dancing Procession held every Whit Tuesday, a unique tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. Its beautiful abbey, medieval market square, and proximity to world-class hiking trails make it a favorite for both history lovers and nature enthusiasts.

Quick Tips
- Currency: Euro (EUR). Cards are widely accepted, but carry cash for small cafes and trail-side kiosks.
- Transport: Free buses connect Echternach to Luxembourg City (about 45 minutes). The town center is easily walkable.
- Tipping: Service included. Rounding up is a nice gesture but not expected.
- Hiking boots: If you plan to explore the Mullerthal Trail, bring proper hiking shoes — the sandstone paths can be slippery, especially after rain.
- Dancing Procession: If visiting on Whit Tuesday (usually May/June), arrive early — this UNESCO event draws thousands of visitors to the small town.

Echternach Abbey & Basilica
Founded by St. Willibrord in 698 AD, this is one of the oldest monastic sites in Europe. The Romanesque basilica houses the crypt with Willibrord's tomb. The adjacent abbey museum displays stunning illuminated manuscripts from the Echternach scriptorium.
Mullerthal Trail
A 112-kilometer network of hiking trails through dramatic sandstone rock formations, narrow gorges, and moss-covered forests. Route 2 starts from Echternach and is the most spectacular, passing through the iconic Schiessentümpel waterfall area.
Dancing Procession (Sprangprozessioun)
A UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event held every Whit Tuesday. Thousands of participants hop and dance through the streets to the basilica in this unique medieval tradition. A truly one-of-a-kind experience.
Market Square (Place du Marché)
The charming medieval heart of Echternach, surrounded by beautifully restored Gothic and Renaissance townhouses. The 15th-century Denzelt (former courthouse) and the town hall create a picturesque ensemble. Great cafes with outdoor terraces.
Echternach Lake (Lac d'Echternach)
A recreational lake just south of the town center with swimming, pedal boats, playgrounds, and walking paths. The surrounding park is perfect for picnics and family outings. Free access.
Schiessentümpel Waterfall
A beautiful small waterfall with a distinctive stone bridge in the Mullerthal forest, about 5 km from Echternach. One of the most photographed spots in Luxembourg. Accessible via a moderate forest trail.
Roman Villa
The remains of a large 1st-century Roman villa, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Luxembourg. The excavated foundations show the layout of this luxurious country estate with its baths and mosaics.
When to Visit
Echternach and the Mullerthal region are best enjoyed in the warmer months, but winter has its own quiet beauty:

Ideal for hiking. Mild weather (8–18°C), lush green forests, and wildflowers. The Dancing Procession usually falls in May or June.

A local favorite on Place du Marché. Simple, honest cooking — croque-monsieurs, salads, and daily specials. Good terrace for people-watching. Mains €9–14.

Near the lake, offering refined French cuisine in an elegant setting. The lunch menu offers good value for quality. Seasonal dishes with local ingredients. Mains €18–28.

Family-friendly Italian restaurant with generous portions of pizza and pasta. A reliable, affordable option in the center. Pizzas around €10–14.
