About Vianden
Vianden is a small medieval town in northeastern Luxembourg, dominated by one of the most impressive feudal castles in Europe. Nestled in the Our river valley and surrounded by dense forests, this picturesque town was once home to Victor Hugo during his exile and remains one of the most visited destinations in Luxembourg.
With a population of just over 2,000, Vianden offers a peaceful escape with cobblestone streets, a charming town center, and excellent hiking trails in the surrounding Ardennes hills.

Quick Tips
- Currency: Euro (EUR). Some smaller shops may be cash-only, so bring some euros.
- Transport: Free public buses connect Vianden to Diekirch and Ettelbruck railway stations. A car is helpful for exploring the surrounding region.
- Tipping: Service is included. Rounding up is appreciated but not required.
- Chairlift:Take the chairlift (télésiège) for panoramic views over the castle and valley — it runs from Easter to October.
- Hiking: The area has excellent marked trails. The Victor Hugo Route along the Our valley is especially scenic and manageable for all fitness levels.
Interesting Places to Visit
Vianden Castle
One of the largest and finest feudal residences of the Romanesque and Gothic periods in Europe. Dating from the 11th to 14th centuries, the castle has been beautifully restored and offers a fascinating museum inside. The views from the ramparts are spectacular.
Victor Hugo House Museum
The house where the famous French writer Victor Hugo lived during his exile in 1871. Now a museum displaying original letters, drawings, and first editions. A must for literature enthusiasts.
Vianden Chairlift (Télésiège)
A scenic open-air chairlift that takes you 440 meters over the Our valley to a hilltop viewpoint at 450m altitude. Stunning views of the castle, town, and surrounding forests. Operates Easter through October.
Trinitarian Church & Cloister
A beautiful Gothic church dating from 1248, featuring a unique two-story structure with remarkable stone carvings. The adjacent cloister hosts cultural exhibitions and concerts throughout the year.
Vianden Pumped-Storage Plant
One of the largest pumped-storage hydroelectric plants in Europe, built inside a mountain. Free guided tours reveal the impressive engineering. The upper reservoir also offers great hiking views.
Our Valley Walking Trail
Follow the scenic Our river on marked trails through lush forest and along the German border. The path from Vianden to Bivels is particularly beautiful and takes about 2 hours each way.
When to Visit
Vianden is most popular in summer, but each season has its charm:
🌸 Spring (March – May)
Lovely and green. Mild temperatures (7–17°C), wildflowers along the Our valley, and the chairlift reopens at Easter. Ideal for hiking.

☀️ Summer (June – August)
Warmest season (17–24°C) and peak tourist time. Long days are perfect for castle visits, chairlift rides, and riverside walks. The medieval festival in August is a highlight.

🍂 Autumn (September – November)
Spectacular fall foliage (6–14°C) in the surrounding Ardennes forests. The castle looks magical framed by golden and red leaves. Fewer visitors and a peaceful atmosphere.

❄️ Winter (December – February)
Cold and quiet (−2 to 4°C). The castle in snow is breathtaking. The Christmas market in December adds festive charm. Many outdoor attractions close, but the castle and museums remain open.

Vianden is small but has several good restaurants serving Luxembourgish and regional cuisine:
Auberge du Château$ – $$
Right below the castle with a lovely terrace. Traditional Luxembourgish dishes like Judd mat Gaardebounen and trout from the Our river. Mains around €14–20.
Hotel-Restaurant Victor Hugo$$
Named after the town's famous resident, this restaurant offers refined French-Luxembourgish cuisine with river views. The set lunch menu is excellent value at €18–22.
Bistro Ancien Cinéma$
A casual bistro in a converted cinema. Burgers, salads, and Flammkuchen at affordable prices. Popular with locals and hikers. Mains €10–15.
Brasserie am Klouschter$ – $$
Located near the Trinitarian church, serving regional specialties and excellent Luxembourg wines. The garden terrace is delightful in summer. Mains €13–19.
Restaurant Bei der Breck$
A simple, family-run spot near the bridge with hearty portions of schnitzel, pasta, and local sausages. Great value. Mains around €10–14.
Café de la Poste$
Traditional café-bistro on Grand-Rue. Good coffee, homemade cakes, and light meals like croque-monsieur and quiche. Perfect for a budget-friendly lunch. €8–12.
