About Delft

Delft is a picture-perfect canal city world-famous for its blue and white pottery (Delftware), its association with the painter Johannes Vermeer, and its historic ties to the Dutch Royal Family. With its tree-lined canals, Gothic and Renaissance architecture, and a lively student population from Delft University of Technology, it strikes a beautiful balance between heritage and youthful energy.

Walking through Delft feels like stepping into a Vermeer painting — the play of light on canals, the quiet courtyards, and the leaning church towers create an atmosphere of timeless beauty. It's smaller and quieter than nearby The Hague and Rotterdam, making it perfect for a peaceful day of exploration.

Quick Tips

  • Currency: Euro (EUR). Card payments accepted almost everywhere.
  • Transport: Delft is very walkable — the historic center is compact and charming. Trains from The Hague take 15 minutes, from Rotterdam 12 minutes.
  • Tipping: Rounding up or 5–10% is appreciated. Not mandatory.
  • Delftware: Buy authentic Delft Blue pottery only from Royal Delft (the last remaining original factory). Much of what's sold in souvenir shops is mass-produced imitation from China.
  • Vermeer: Follow the Vermeer trail — markers on the ground guide you to locations connected to the painter's life and the scenes depicted in his works.

Interesting Places to Visit

Royal Delft (Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles)

The last remaining Delftware factory from the 17th century, still producing hand-painted pottery. Watch artisans at work, explore the museum, and try painting your own tile. The factory shop has pieces at factory prices.

Nieuwe Kerk (New Church)

A soaring Gothic church on the Markt square, home to the Royal Crypt of the House of Orange-Nassau. William the Silent's elaborate marble tomb is the centerpiece. Climb the 376 steps of the 109-meter tower for panoramic views over Delft and beyond.

Oude Kerk (Old Church)

Delft's oldest church, dating from 1246, with a famously leaning tower (nearly 2 meters off-center). Johannes Vermeer is buried here. The stained glass windows and the atmospheric interior make it one of the most beautiful churches in the Netherlands.

Vermeer Centrum Delft

A museum dedicated to Johannes Vermeer's life and work in his hometown. Reproductions of all 37 known Vermeer paintings in one place, plus exhibits on his techniques, pigments, and use of the camera obscura. Great context before seeing originals elsewhere.

Markt (Market Square)

One of the largest market squares in the Netherlands, framed by the Nieuwe Kerk and the Renaissance-era City Hall. Thursday general market and Saturday flower market are lively affairs. Terrace cafés ring the square — perfect for leisurely people- watching.

Museum Prinsenhof Delft

The former residence of William the Silent, where he was assassinated in 1584. The bullet holes in the staircase wall are still visible. Now a museum covering Delft's Golden Age, the House of Orange, and contemporary art.

Oostpoort (Eastern Gate)

The only surviving city gate of Delft, dating from around 1400. Two pointed towers connected by a bridge over the canal create one of the most photographed scenes in the city. Especially beautiful in the golden light of late afternoon.
