About Štip
Štip is the cultural capital of eastern North Macedonia, set in the valley where the Bregalnica and Otinja rivers meet. Known for its medieval fortress, university, and the annual Makfest music festival, Štip is a lively city with deep historical roots stretching back to the ancient Astibo settlement.
The city is also a center of the Macedonian textile industry and serves as a gateway to the beautiful wine country of the Tikveš region. Its hilltop fortress, lively student scene, and surrounding nature make it a worthwhile stop for travelers exploring the east.

Quick Tips
- Currency: Macedonian Denar (MKD). Cash is essential — card acceptance is limited outside larger restaurants and hotels.
- Transport: The city center is compact and walkable. Buses connect to Skopje (1.5 hours) and other eastern cities. Taxis are very affordable.
- Tipping: Round up the bill or add 10%. Tipping is appreciated but not expected.
- Makfest: If visiting in late autumn, try to catch Makfest — North Macedonia's biggest pop music festival, held annually in Štip since 1968.
- Wine country: The nearby Tikveš wine region produces excellent reds (Vranec) and whites (Smederevka). Several wineries offer tastings a short drive from the city.
Interesting Places to Visit
Isar Fortress (Исар)
A medieval fortress dramatically perched on a rocky hilltop above the city. The ruins offer commanding views of Štip, the river valleys, and the surrounding mountains. A short but steep hike from the center.
Bargala Archaeological Site
The ruins of a late Roman and early Byzantine fortified city, 12 km northeast of Štip. Features impressive walls, an episcopal basilica with floor mosaics, and baths. One of the most significant archaeological sites in eastern Macedonia.
Church of the Holy Archangel Michael
A 14th-century church built into the rock below Isar Fortress. Remarkable medieval frescoes inside a modest exterior. One of the city's oldest and most atmospheric religious sites.
National Museum of Štip
A regional museum with archaeological finds from Bargala and the surrounding area, ethnographic exhibits, and historical artifacts. Small but well-curated. Good introduction to the region's layered history.
Bregalnica River Walk
A pleasant riverside promenade along the Bregalnica. Locals gather here in the evenings for walks, coffee, and socializing. Several cafés and parks line the route. Best at sunset.
Novo Selo Monastery
A peaceful monastery a few kilometers from Štip, nestled in green hills. Known for its frescoes and the annual pilgrimage. Offers a quiet retreat with views of the eastern Macedonian landscape.
Kežovica Thermal Baths
Natural hot springs on the outskirts of Štip, known for their therapeutic mineral waters. The outdoor pools are popular with locals year-round. A relaxing stop after a day of sightseeing.
When to Visit
Štip has a continental climate with warm summers and moderate winters, typical of eastern North Macedonia:

Great for sightseeing. Temperatures from 10–24°C. The Bregalnica valley is green, and Bargala is pleasant to explore without summer heat.

A lively pub with excellent draft beer and simple pub food. Popular with students and locals. Good ćevapi, fries, and salads. Mains 150–300 MKD (~€2.50–5).
Restoran Bregalnica$ – $$
Riverside restaurant with a pleasant terrace overlooking the Bregalnica. Traditional Macedonian cuisine, fresh fish, and an extensive wine list from the Tikveš region. Mains 250–450 MKD (~€4–7).
Kebapčilnica Stari Grad$
No-nonsense kebab shop in the old part of town. Excellent ćevapi, kebabs, and grilled meats at rock-bottom prices. Cash only. A full meal for under 200 MKD (~€3.50).
Furna — Traditional Bakery$
Fresh burek, pastrmajlija, and bread from a traditional oven. Multiple locations around the city. The ultimate cheap Macedonian breakfast — 60–120 MKD (~€1–2).
Restoran Astibo$$ – $$$
The most upscale option in Štip, named after the ancient city. Refined Macedonian dishes, good wine selection, and attentive service. Special occasions and celebrations. Mains 400–700 MKD (~€7–12).
Café Korzo$
Central café and meeting point with light meals, excellent coffee, and fresh juices. Great for breakfast or an afternoon break. Snacks and drinks 60–200 MKD (~€1–3.50).
