Strumica
About Strumica
Strumica is a sun-drenched city in southeastern North Macedonia, known for its carnival tradition — one of the oldest and most vibrant in the Balkans. Surrounded by fertile agricultural land, hot springs, and forested mountains, the city has a relaxed, almost Mediterranean character.
The nearby Vodoca and Veljusa monasteries house some of the finest Byzantine frescoes in the country, while the Smolare and Kolešino waterfalls provide spectacular natural scenery. Strumica's thermal baths, agricultural heritage, and carnival make it one of eastern Macedonia's most interesting destinations.

Quick Tips
- Currency: Macedonian Denar (MKD). Cash is preferred in most places. A few restaurants accept cards, but don't rely on it.
- Transport: The center is easily walkable. You'll need a car or taxi for the waterfalls, monasteries, and thermal baths. Buses connect to Skopje (3 hours) and nearby towns.
- Tipping: Round up or leave 10%. Locals appreciate it but don't expect it.
- Carnival: Strumica's carnival (February/March) is legendary — masked parades, live music, and street parties. Book accommodation well in advance if visiting during this time.
- Local produce: The Strumica valley is famous for peppers, tomatoes, and ajvar. Visit the green market for the freshest and cheapest produce in the country.
