Quick Tips
- Currency: Macedonian Denar (MKD). Cash is king in Tetovo — many smaller shops and restaurants don't accept cards. ATMs are available in the center.
- Transport: The center is walkable. Buses run to Skopje (40 min) frequently. You'll need a taxi or car for Popova Šapka and mountain excursions.
- Tipping: Round up or leave 10%. Tipping culture is relaxed.
- Language: Albanian is the primary language here, though Macedonian is also widely spoken. Many younger people speak some English.
- Mountain safety: If hiking in the Šar Mountains, inform someone of your route. Weather can change quickly at higher elevations. Hire a local guide for remote trails.
Interesting Places to Visit
Painted Mosque (Šarena Džamija)
A stunning 15th-century mosque covered in elaborate floral paintings inside and out. The vibrant geometric and botanical frescoes make it one of the most unique Islamic buildings in the Balkans. Free to visit outside prayer times.
Popova Šapka Ski Resort
A mountain resort at 1,780 meters in the Šar Mountains, just 18 km from Tetovo. Popular for skiing in winter and hiking in summer. Stunning alpine meadows, glacial lakes, and panoramic views of Kosovo and Albania.
Tetovo Fortress (Балтепе)
Ottoman-era fortress ruins overlooking the city and the Polog valley. A short uphill walk rewards you with excellent views of Tetovo with the Šar Mountains as a dramatic backdrop.
Arabati Baba Teḱe
A rare and well-preserved Bektashi dervish lodge from the 16th century. Beautiful gardens, prayer halls, and a tranquil atmosphere. One of the few remaining teḱes in the Balkans — a fascinating glimpse into Sufi tradition.
Leshok Monastery (Лешочки Манастир)
A monastery complex 8 km from Tetovo, associated with the medieval scholar Kiril Pejčinoviḱ. Set in a peaceful mountain valley with medieval churches and a natural spring. A contemplative spot with deep historical roots.
Šar Mountains Hiking Trails
The Šar Mountains offer some of the best hiking in the Balkans — from alpine meadows and glacial lakes (Bogovinsko, Belo) to peaks over 2,700 meters. The Šar Mountain Trail connects multiple villages and mountain huts.
Tetovo Bazaar
A bustling daily market with fresh produce, spices, traditional sweets, and household goods. The food section is excellent for trying local cheeses, olives, and dried meats. Best in the morning.
When to Visit
Tetovo's mountain setting means cooler temperatures than the rest of North Macedonia, with great variety across seasons:
🌸 Spring (March – May)
Excellent for nature. Temperatures from 8–20°C. Alpine wildflowers bloom in the Šar Mountains. Rivers run full from snowmelt. The Painted Mosque garden is at its prettiest.

☀️ Summer (June – August)
Warm (22–32°C) in the city, cooler in the mountains. Peak hiking season with access to high-altitude lakes and trails. Popova Šapka is a cool mountain escape.

🍂 Autumn (September – November)
Colorful foliage (10–22°C). September is still warm and ideal for hiking. The bazaar overflows with seasonal produce. Quieter tourist season with good weather.

Cold (−5 to 3°C) with reliable snow in the mountains. Popova Šapka offers affordable skiing. The city is quiet but the bazaar stays lively and warm cafés beckon.

One of the most popular restaurants in Tetovo, serving Albanian and Macedonian cuisine. Excellent grilled meats, fresh salads, and homemade bread. Large portions and friendly atmosphere. Mains 250–450 MKD (~€4–7).
Restoran Epoka$ – $$
Well-known local restaurant with a spacious terrace. Specializes in grilled meats, flija (layered pastry), and traditional dishes. Good for family dining. Mains 250–400 MKD (~€4–7).
Totovi$
A legendary spot for qebapa (Albanian-style kebabs). Simple setting but outstanding grilled meats served with fresh lepinja bread, onions, and ajvar. A full meal for 150–250 MKD (~€2.50–4).
Çarshia e Vjetër$ – $$
Set in the old bazaar area, this restaurant serves traditional dishes in a historic setting. Try the tavë kosi (lamb with yogurt) and the fresh mountain trout. Mains 250–450 MKD (~€4–7).
Furra Tetovare$
Traditional bakery with fresh burek, pide, and other baked goods straight from the oven. Outstanding börek with spinach and cheese. Breakfast or snack for 50–120 MKD (~€0.80–2).
Flija House$
Specializes in flija — a traditional Albanian layered pastry baked under a metal bell (saç). Served with cream and honey or alongside yogurt. A unique culinary experience for 150–250 MKD (~€2.50–4).
