About Zakopane

Zakopane is Poland's premier mountain resort, nestled at the foot of the Tatra Mountains — the highest range in the Carpathians. Known as the "winter capital of Poland," it is a paradise for hikers, skiers, and nature lovers. The unique Zakopane Style wooden architecture and vibrant highland culture of the Górale (mountain people) give it a distinct character.

Beyond outdoor adventure, Zakopane's bustling Krupówki pedestrian street offers shopping, street food, and entertainment. The town is famous for oscypek (smoked sheep cheese), hearty mountain cuisine, and stunning views that rival the Alps at a fraction of the cost.

Quick Tips

  • Currency: Polish Złoty (PLN). Cards accepted in hotels and restaurants, but carry cash for mountain huts, markets, and street food vendors.
  • Transport: Krupówki and the town center are walkable. For trailheads, use local minibuses or taxis. From Kraków, take a FlixBus or minibus (2 hours).
  • Tipping: 10% in restaurants. At mountain huts, rounding up is appreciated.
  • Hiking gear: Proper hiking boots are essential for Tatra trails. Weather changes rapidly in the mountains — bring layers and a rain jacket even in summer.
  • Oscypek: Buy smoked sheep cheese from highlanders on Krupówki — try it grilled with cranberry sauce. Look for the EU-protected genuine version.
