Banská Bystrica
About Banská Bystrica
Banská Bystrica sits in the heart of Slovakia, surrounded by the Low Tatras and Veľká Fatra mountain ranges. Once a wealthy medieval copper-mining town, it features one of Slovakia's most beautiful historic squares — Námestie SNP — ringed by Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque townhouses. The city is also historically significant as the center of the Slovak National Uprising against Nazi occupation in 1944.
Today, Banská Bystrica is a lively university city with an excellent cultural scene, surrounded by stunning hiking and skiing territory. It's an ideal base for exploring central Slovakia's mountains, castles, and villages.
