High Tatras
About the High Tatras
The High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry) are the smallest alpine mountain range in the world and the highest part of the Carpathian Mountains, with peaks reaching over 2,600 meters. Despite their compact size — just 26 km long — they pack in dramatic granite peaks, glacial lakes, waterfalls, and alpine meadows that rival the Alps at a fraction of the cost and crowds.
The Tatranská Lomnica area, on the eastern side, is the most popular base for visitors. A cable car whisks you up to Lomnický štít (2,634m) for breathtaking 360-degree views. The region is connected by the Tatra Electric Railway, making it easy to hop between resort towns, trailheads, and ski areas without a car.

Quick Tips
- Currency: Euro (EUR). Cards accepted at hotels and restaurants, but mountain huts often prefer cash. Bring enough for the day when hiking.
- Transport: The Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ) connects Tatranská Lomnica, Starý Smokovec, and Štrbské Pleso. A day pass is great value. No car needed once you arrive.
- Tipping: Round up or leave 10% at restaurants. At mountain huts, even a small tip is appreciated.
- Hiking permits: Most trails are free, but some high-altitude routes require mountain guide certification. Check trail status at tanap.org — some paths close seasonally for wildlife protection (November–June).
- Weather: Mountain weather changes rapidly. Always bring layers, rain gear, and sturdy footwear — even in summer. Check forecasts at mountain.rescue.sk before heading out.
