About Trenčín

Trenčín is a historic city in western Slovakia dominated by its magnificent castle perched high on a cliff above the Váh River. The city has roots stretching back to Roman times — a Latin inscription from 179 AD carved into the castle rock by Roman legionaries is the most northerly evidence of Roman military presence in Central Europe.

Today, Trenčín is best known for hosting the Pohoda music festival, Slovakia's largest open-air music event. The compact, well-preserved old town with its baroque plague column, painted townhouses, and lively pedestrian street make it a delightful stop between Bratislava and Žilina.
