About Bled

Lake Bled is Slovenia's most iconic destination — a turquoise glacial lake with a fairy-tale island church, a medieval cliff-top castle, and the Julian Alps as a backdrop. It's the kind of scenery that looks photoshopped but is very much real.

Despite its postcard fame, Bled remains a small, walkable town. You can circle the lake on foot in about two hours, swim in summer, and use it as a base for hiking in Triglav National Park. Don't leave without trying the legendary kremšnita (cream cake).

Quick Tips

  • Currency: Euro (EUR). Cards accepted at most hotels and restaurants. Carry cash for pletna boat rides and small vendors.
  • Transport: Bled is reachable by bus from Ljubljana (75 min). The town is small enough to explore on foot. Rent bikes to explore the surroundings.
  • Tipping: Round up or leave 5–10% in restaurants. Not expected but appreciated.
  • Pletna boats: The traditional flat-bottomed boats to Bled Island cost around €15 return. You can also rent a rowboat for about €20/hour.
  • Vintgar Gorge: Just 4 km from Bled, this stunning gorge is easily walkable. Go early morning to avoid crowds.

Interesting Places to Visit

Bled Island & Church of the Assumption

The tiny island in the middle of Lake Bled holds a 17th-century pilgrimage church with a wishing bell. Reach it by traditional pletna boat or swim across in summer. Climb the 99 stone steps to ring the bell for good luck.

Bled Castle (Blejski grad)

Perched on a 130-meter cliff above the lake, this is one of Slovenia's oldest castles (11th century). The museum inside tells the history of the region, and the terrace offers the best panoramic views of the lake and island.

Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar)

A spectacular 1.6 km wooden walkway through a narrow gorge carved by the Radovna River. Crystal-clear pools, rapids, and a 13-meter waterfall at the end. Open April–November.

Triglav National Park

Slovenia's only national park is right on Bled's doorstep. Hike to alpine meadows, waterfalls, and mountain huts. The Pokljuka plateau is an easy day trip with stunning forest walks.

Straža Hill

A small hill on the south side of the lake with a chairlift, summer toboggan run, and beautiful viewpoints. In winter it serves as a family-friendly ski slope. Great for kids.

Lake Bohinj

Just 30 minutes from Bled, this larger and wilder glacial lake sits deeper in Triglav National Park. Less crowded and more rugged than Bled, with great swimming and the Savica Waterfall nearby.

When to Visit

Bled is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons:

🌸 Spring (March – May)

Lovely and quiet. Temperatures rise (8–20°C), wildflowers bloom, and the lake begins to warm. Fewer tourists than summer. Vintgar Gorge reopens in April.

  • Waterfalls at peak flow from snowmelt
  • Great for hiking and cycling
  • Accommodation prices still reasonable

☀️ Summer (June – August)

Peak season (20–28°C). The lake is warm enough for swimming. Long days mean more time for hiking and outdoor activities. Book accommodation well in advance.

  • Swimming and rowing on the lake
  • Bled Days festival (late July)
  • Best weather for Triglav hikes

🍂 Autumn (September – November)

Stunning fall colors reflected in the lake (5–18°C). Crowds thin significantly. September is still warm and arguably the most photogenic month with golden larches.

  • Spectacular foliage around the lake
  • Mushroom foraging season
  • Quieter trails in Triglav

❄️ Winter (December – February)

Cold and magical (−5 to 3°C). The lake occasionally freezes, the castle is dusted with snow, and Straža opens for skiing. A peaceful, uncrowded time to visit.

  • Straža ski slope and ice skating
  • Christmas atmosphere in the village
  • Nearby Vogel ski resort
