About Postojna

Postojna is a small town in southwestern Slovenia best known for Postojna Cave, one of the most visited caves in the world. The cave system stretches over 24 kilometers and features an underground railway, massive stalactite chambers, and the famous olm — a blind cave salamander nicknamed the "baby dragon."

Beyond the caves, Postojna sits in the heart of the Karst region, a landscape of sinkholes, underground rivers, and dramatic geology. The nearby Predjama Castle, built into a cliff face, is one of the most extraordinary castles in Europe. Together they make Postojna a must-visit day trip or overnight stay.

Interesting Places to Visit

Postojna Cave (Postojnska jama)

The crown jewel of Slovenian tourism. A 90-minute guided tour includes a ride on the underground railway through spectacular stalactite formations. Don't miss the Vivarium where you can see the famous olm (Proteus anguinus), a blind cave-dwelling amphibian.

Predjama Castle (Predjamski grad)

A stunning Renaissance castle built into a 123-meter cliff face. The legend of the robber baron Erazem, who used a secret cave tunnel to resist a siege, makes this one of the most dramatic castles in Europe. 10 km from Postojna Cave.

Pivka Cave & Black Cave

Part of the Postojna cave system but far less visited. These wilder caves offer a more adventurous experience with underground rivers and dramatic chambers. Guided tours available from the main Postojna complex.

Planina Cave

The largest water cave in Slovenia, where two underground rivers merge. Known for its massive entrance and the confluence of the Rak and Pivka rivers inside the cave. A spectacular sight, especially after rain.

Notranjska Regional Park

A protected area encompassing the intermittent Lake Cerknica — one of Europe's largest disappearing lakes. In spring it fills with water; by late summer it drains into sinkholes. A fascinating karst phenomenon.

Škocjan Caves (UNESCO)

About 40 km from Postojna, these UNESCO-listed caves feature one of the largest underground chambers in the world. More rugged and less commercialized than Postojna, with a dramatic underground canyon. Absolutely worth the detour.

Snežnik Castle

A fairy-tale Renaissance castle surrounded by a lake, about 30 km south of Postojna. One of the best-preserved castles in Slovenia with original furnishings and a beautiful park. Far off the tourist trail.

When to Visit

Postojna's caves are open year-round, but the surrounding region offers different experiences by season:

  • Baby olms sometimes born in the cave vivarium
  • Great weather for hiking the Karst

☀️ Summer (June – August)
