Ptuj
About Ptuj
Ptuj is the oldest recorded town in Slovenia, with roots stretching back to the Roman era when it was known as Poetovio. Perched along the Drava River beneath a hilltop castle, it's a beautifully preserved medieval town with a rich history spanning over two millennia.
The town is most famous for Kurentovanje, one of Europe's oldest and most spectacular carnival traditions, featuring the sheepskin-clad Kurent figures who drive away winter. Beyond the carnival, Ptuj offers excellent wine cellars, Roman ruins, and a quiet, authentic Slovenian atmosphere.
