Kiruna
About Kiruna
Kiruna is Sweden's northernmost city, located 145 km above the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland. Founded in 1900 around the world's largest underground iron ore mine, the entire city center is currently being relocated 3 km east due to ground subsidence from mining — a remarkable urban engineering feat.
Kiruna is the gateway to Arctic adventures: the Northern Lights, the famous ICEHOTEL in nearby Jukkasjärvi, midnight sun in summer, dog sledding, and Sámi culture. The surrounding wilderness of Abisko National Park offers some of the best aurora viewing in the world.
