About Basel

Basel sits at the junction of Switzerland, France, and Germany on the Rhine river, and this tri-national character infuses every aspect of the city. It's Switzerland's undisputed cultural capital — with nearly 40 museums in a compact area, it has the highest density of museums in Europe. Art Basel, the world's premier contemporary art fair, started here.

Beyond art, Basel is a city of surprising contrasts: medieval Old Town lanes lead to cutting-edge architecture by Renzo Piano, Herzog & de Meuron, and Zaha Hadid. In summer, locals swim in the Rhine using waterproof "Wickelfisch" bags to keep their clothes dry.
