About Lucerne

Lucerne (Luzern in German) is often called Switzerland's most beautiful city, and it's easy to see why. Sitting on the shores of Lake Lucerne with the dramatic peaks of Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi as a backdrop, the city is a postcard come to life. The medieval Old Town with its painted facades, covered wooden bridges, and cobblestone squares has charmed visitors for centuries.

Despite its popularity with tourists, Lucerne maintains an authentic Swiss character. It's also the gateway to Central Switzerland's mountains and lakes, making it an ideal base for both urban exploration and Alpine adventures.

Quick Tips

  • Currency: Swiss Franc (CHF). Cards widely accepted. 1 CHF ≈ €1.
  • Transport: The Old Town is walkable. For mountain excursions, consider the Tell-Pass for unlimited travel on boats, trains, and cable cars in the region.
  • Tipping: Service included. Rounding up is customary.
  • Lake cruises: The historic paddle steamers on Lake Lucerne are included in the Swiss Travel Pass. A scenic ride to Flüelen takes about 3 hours.
  • Mountain weather: Temperatures at the summit of Pilatus or Rigi can be 10–15°C cooler than the city. Bring layers even in summer.

Interesting Places to Visit

Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke)

Europe's oldest covered wooden bridge, dating to 1333. The 204-meter bridge spans the Reuss river diagonally and features 17th-century paintings under its roof. The adjacent Water Tower is one of the most photographed landmarks in Switzerland.

Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal)

A moving sculpture of a dying lion carved into a rock face, commemorating Swiss Guards who died during the French Revolution. Mark Twain called it "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world." Free, always accessible.

Mount Pilatus

Lucerne's dramatic home mountain (2,128 m). Take the world's steepest cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad or the panoramic gondola from Kriens. The "Golden Round Trip" combines boat, cogwheel railway, cable car, and bus in one spectacular circuit.

Mount Rigi — Queen of the Mountains

A panoramic mountain accessible by cogwheel railway or cable car, offering 360° views of the Alps and lakes. Europe's first mountain railway (1871) runs here. Excellent hiking in summer and snow-shoeing in winter.

Spreuer Bridge (Spreuerbrücke)

The lesser-known covered wooden bridge with a remarkable "Dance of Death" painting cycle from the 17th century. Less crowded than the Chapel Bridge and equally atmospheric. A 5-minute walk upstream.

Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus)

Switzerland's most-visited museum, dedicated to transport and communication. Interactive exhibits on trains, planes, cars, and space. Includes a planetarium, IMAX cinema, and the Swiss Chocolate Adventure ride. Great for families.

Musegg Wall & Towers

Well-preserved medieval fortification wall with nine towers above the Old Town. Three towers are open to climb for free, offering great views over the rooftops and lake. The Zyt Tower houses Lucerne's oldest clock (1535).
