About Kamianets-Podilskyi

Kamianets-Podilskyi is one of Ukraine's most spectacular small cities, dramatically perched on a rocky island formed by a loop of the Smotrych River canyon. The city's medieval fortress, one of the best preserved in Eastern Europe, towers above sheer cliffs — a sight that has drawn comparisons to Toledo and Mont Saint-Michel.

With over a thousand years of history, the Old Town features Polish, Turkish, Lithuanian, and Ukrainian architectural layers. It's a place where you can walk across a medieval bridge, explore ancient fortifications, and feel transported to another era.

Quick Tips

  • Currency: Ukrainian Hryvnia (UAH). Bring cash — card acceptance is improving but not universal in this smaller city.
  • Transport: The Old Town is compact and best explored on foot. From the bus/train station, marshrutkas run to the center. Consider renting a car for exploring the surrounding Podillia region.
  • Tipping: 10% in restaurants is appreciated.
  • Footwear: Wear sturdy shoes — the cobblestones and canyon trails are uneven. The fortress involves lots of stairs and steep paths.
  • Hot air balloons: The city is famous for its annual balloon festival. Even outside the festival, balloon rides over the canyon are sometimes available.

Interesting Places to Visit

Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle (Old Fortress)

The crown jewel of the city — a dramatic medieval fortress connected to the Old Town by a stone bridge spanning the Smotrych River canyon. Multiple towers, courtyards, and museum exhibits. The views from the towers are breathtaking. Allow 2–3 hours.

Smotrych River Canyon

The natural canyon that surrounds the Old Town on three sides, creating a natural fortress. Walk the canyon trails for dramatic views of the castle and cliffs. Several viewpoints along the rim offer perfect photo opportunities.

Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul

A remarkable cathedral with a Turkish minaret — a unique result of the city's Ottoman period. When the Turks captured the city, they converted the cathedral into a mosque and added the minaret. After liberation, a golden Virgin Mary was placed atop it.

Old Town (Stare Misto)

The historic island town with medieval streets, Armenian and Polish quarters, ancient churches, and atmospheric ruins. Explore the Town Hall, the Armenian well, and the network of narrow lanes that have barely changed in centuries.

New Fortress (Nova Fortetsya)

A later fortification built on the hill across from the Old Castle. Less restored but more atmospheric — you can explore its bastions and tunnels with fewer tourists. Offers excellent panoramic views of the Old Fortress and canyon.

Turkish Bridge

The historic stone bridge connecting the Old Town to the Castle. Originally built in the 16th century and reinforced during the Ottoman period. Walking across it with the canyon below and the fortress ahead is one of Ukraine's most dramatic experiences.

Ruska Brama (Russian Gate)

A medieval gate tower that once guarded the entrance to the Old Town. Now a small museum with exhibits on the city's fortification history. The tower offers views over the river valley.
